A glimpse of the war Clouds over Kwong Tung and Fukien. Chéung Ngai's desire to recover Chiu On by military force. News re resistance made by the Revolutionary Army against Cheung

attitude of the Authorities of Chiu Chau and Srator towards the Ohiu On fighting.

Recently, news has been received that war has suddenly broken out at the frontiers between Kwong Tung and Fukien, and this occurring during the progress of the Northern Expedition, has aroused keen attention among the public. We learn that the sudden conflict between the two parties originated in Cheung Ngai's attempt to avail himself of the opportunities afforded him, to recover Chiu On. This conflict if prolonged, is sure to lead to war between Kwong Tung and Fukien, and will greatly affect the present posi- tion for Chiu On is a strategic position, and its pass at Fan Shui Kwan has a great military value which no commander can afford to neglect. Originally this District was under the jurisdiction of Fukien, but last year when the Revol-

utionary Army attacked Chan (Kwing King) in its eastern expedition, the Fukienese helped Lau Chi Luk in secret, and

allotted Chiu On and several other districts for the accom-

modation of the troops of Chan. Later, the Revolutionary

Army marched into Fukien in pursuit of Chan, took Chiu On

from the hands of Chan's troops, and garrisoned it with a large force. Thus unconditionally the District was included

within the jurisdiction of Kwong Tung. Of late, when the Northern Expedition was sent out, the Military Authorities at Chiu Chow and Swatow ordered Cheung Ching (a Fukienese)

Division Commander of the Revolutionary Army, to fortify Chiu On and to make every preparation for the invasion of Fukien so as to strengthen the rear of the Northern Expedi-

tion.
